Sweeteners are meant to help you shed unwanted kilos, but they have featured in the news for years for all the wrong reasons...

And while there have been reports of a potential link to cancer, the studies haven't been conclusive... Until now.

You could be at increased risk of cancer if you consume artificial sweeteners... 

In this study, researchers looked at data from over 100,000 people over an eight year period, and they found that those who consume high levels of sweeteners have an icreased risk of deveoping cancer.

The study was published in PLOS Medicine.

Two of the artificial sweeteners that stood out in this study are aspartame and acesulphame K. 

The type of cancers the researchers saw more of include breast, colorectal, stomach and prostate.

Turns out these sweeteners are not as innocent as we'd like them to be - or even beneficial for that matter!

Aspartame, for example, turns into formaldehyde (a well-known carcinogen) when the body digests it.

Worse, some of these sweeteners have been shown to damage our DNA and switch off the genes that protect us from cancer through a process of self-destruction. 

Another way sweeteners can affect our health negatively is that they can change the bacterial balance in our gut - which has been shown to have an impactful influence on our health.

How to ensure you don't mistakenly consume artificial sweeteners...

The most important thing you can do when shopping is read product labels.

Often, a product will look like it's beneficial to our health because of statements like, "'low fat" and "zero sugar" but in fact, the sugar substitute is not a healthier option. 

Another tip is to look for products that contain natural sweeteners, like stevia and xylitol. 

These have been shown to be beneficial in small dosages - and you don't need much of it to sweeten your food.
