There are two types of belly fat, namely subcutaneous and visceral.

Subcutaneous means beneath (sub) the skin (cutaneous) which is the fat you can pinch.

We store this fat in areas like our love handles, inner thighs, triceps and our bellies.

A moderate amount of subcutaneous fat is essential for a healthy body.

But, like most things in life too much subcutaneous fat can be harmful.

The good news is you can shed this kind of fat.

Visceral fat, on the other hand, is more dangerous and difficult to shed. It's the fat that wraps around your internal organs, like your liver and heart.

And the danger with having this kind of fat is you can be very skinny and still have too much visceral fat stored without even knowing it.

Too much visceral fat can literally claim years off your life.

Getting rid of your fat, whether it's subcutaneous or visceral is similar. And you know it's no secret: The best way to a flatter belly is regular exercise and a healthy diet.

But there are things that can help - like certain foods you eat.

Fish

When your diet is low in omega 3, the pituitary gland doesn’t work optimally. This leads to low production of melatonin, your sleep hormone.

Foods high in omega 3 are also rich in proteins. And recent studies show eating foods high in protein help you stay full for longer and helps reduce cravings. You also burn more calories digesting proteins than when you eat carbs.

Nuts are a great source of mood-boosting magnesium. Low levels of magnesium aso affects the production of melatonin, and can lead to depression and cravings, especially in the colder months we're heading into.

Foods like nuts, fish, lentils, soy and black beans are rich in magnesium.

Calcium-rich foods

Recent studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham found 100 premenopausal women reduced their belly fat by eating more calcium-rich foods.

Calcium doesn’t only help you burn belly fat, it also helps prevent muscle cramps and promotes healthy bones.
