Work off your Easter eggs at home with this routine

by , 28 March 2013

With Easter upon us, over-indulging in chocolate-filled Easter bunnies is probably top of mind for you right now - especially if you have a sweet tooth for all things chocolate! So why not use this long weekend to try out some of these great exercise ideas.

fitnessDouble unders

Do two full rotations of the rope for every jump. The trick with this is to practise and then practise some more. You don’t need to jump high it’s the speed of the rope that’s important. Having a heavier rope can make this easier. Landing lightly on your feet is safe and more effective. If you land too hard it will be difficult for the next jump.
Reps: 3-5 sets of 30.

fitnessBox jumps
Stand 30cm away facing your platform or steps. Do a partial squat and then jump up, driving your arms up, landing on top of the platform. Your landing should be controlled and soft. Step off the platform and repeat. Start with a low platform increase the height when you are ready.
Reps: 3-5 sets of 8-15.

FitnessHurdle and burpees
Use a hurdle or a rope placed on the ground. Face the hurdle front-on. Jump forward over the hurdle and land softly on the other side. Then drop down into a burpee: squat, hands to the ground, jump your feet back into a push-up type position, drop your torso and thighs to the ground and then get back up to standing as quickly as you can. Repeat.
Reps: 3-5 sets of 6-15.
Tone your whole body with swimming
Take advantage of the still warm days of the season and enjoy some laps in the pool.  If your gym has a swimming pool take advantage of it. The water is always warm there. Swimming is the best exercise you can do to tone up your whole body because you’re working almost every muscle in your body. If your swimming skills are not particularly fantastic then perhaps you can try water aerobics. You’ll be under water and mostly ‘weightless’ – it’ll be a lot easier to do simple exercises such as squats, lunges and crunches. But be warned, it may seem easy in water but you will feel the results after!
Should you prefer something gentler, a walk around the block is a great way to exercise, especially when you can take your family and friends along.  Or even  a game of catchers with your children in the park.
