Watch your heart health if you sleep too much, warn experts

If you frequently sleep more than ten hours a night, it might be harming your heart health, warn experts.

In a recent study, experts found that people - they call them “long sleepers” - who sleep too much have just as high a risk of heart disease as short sleepers.

What they found in their study was that long sleepers had significantly high levels of the heart disease marker, C-reactive protein, in their blood.

It's an inflammatory marker that doctors commonly look for in patients that come in with symptoms of a heart attack.

But what exactly causes this inflammation when sleep is supposed to be good for you?

You have to get the right amount of sleep to keep your heart health in check

 
After years of research, experts say the average, optimal amount of sleep you need is between seven and nine hours every night.
 
Six is definitely too little – it doesn’t give your body enough time to repair itself. And more than ten is far too much!
 
This because your body starts going through sleep cycles again. If you continue to sleep, you’ll sleep deeper than before because of the cycles, with the deep sleep cycles becoming longer and longer.
 
This means, when you do wake up – usually with an alarm – you’re likely to wake up out of a very deep sleep. So it’s no wonder you feel groggy and sleepy! You didn't come out of a lighter cycle of sleep, which would leave you feeling awake and refreshed.
 
Because your body now takes longer to adjust to being awake, it feels under stress. And, as you know, increasing your body’s stress levels is the worst thing you can do!
 
Think about what inflammation does to your heart health.

Use an activity tracker to get the right amount of sleep and save your heart health

 
Activity trackers – or wearables – hit the market hard this year.
 
And with Nike, Fitbit, Garmin, Polar and all the other big names in the sporting and health world coming out with their own versions of activity trackers, there’s a good chance you’ll find one you’re looking for.
