Study suggests that cannabinoids may be as effective as drugs to prevent heart disease
The marijuana plant contains a group of compounds called cannabinoids, which past animal studies suggest may prevent a number of health conditions. These include high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack and atherosclerosis.

Now, researchers from the University of Nottingham School of Medicine in Nottingham in the UK have found that cannabinoids may have the very same effects in humans!

Study finds that cannabinoids help lower blood pressure and improve circulation

The study, which was led by Dr Saoirse O’Sullivan, was published in the journal Pharmacological Research.

Dr O’Sullivan and his team discovered that cannabinoids affect blood vessels by causing them to relax and widen. They explained that the relaxation of blood vessels helps lower blood pressure and improve circulation.

This study is the very first one to demonstrate this response to cannabinoids in human tissue samples.

Another team of researchers from the University of Nottingham presented findings at the UK Stroke Forum conference that showed that cannabinoids may even protect the brain after stroke.

People usually use drugs called vasodilators to relax their blood vessels and prevent heart disease

Dr O’Sullivan explained that people usually use vasodilators, a class of drugs, to relax their blood vessels and maintain low blood pressure in order to prevent developing heart disease

These drugs are commonly used amongst people who are at high risk of heart disease – for example, those with hypertension or angina.

Mounting CBD research brings hope for many...

CBD is produced in the body. These are known as endocannabinoids. But they can also be derived from the marijuana plant (phytocannabinoids) for people whose bodies don't produce enough CBD to keep the body's systems running smoothly and in a state of balance.

Researchers only discovered the endocannabinoid system in the 1990s which explains why authorities are still grappling with the idea of legalising the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

In the meantime, research is mounting, month after month, showing that this plant may contain the compounds that we have all been hoping for, that could finally put an end to life-robbing diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
