I’ve been researching a lot about protein rich diets recently for one of my assignments. And I found something I just have to share with you.
But first, let me tell you a bit about protein and how it works in your body.
The basic building blocks of protein are amino acids. And there are 20 that your body uses.
When you eat foods containing protein, your body breaks them down into the individual amino acids. This means they’re freely available to make other proteins your body needs for things like your hair and nails, bone, muscle, blood, skin and cartilage. Amino acids are also important for making the proteins in your hormones and the receptors they bind to.

Seven of the 20 amino acids heal and help your heart stay healthy

In a University of East Anglia’s Norwich Medical School study, Dr Amy Jenkins and her team found that seven amino acids are essential to your heart health.
And it’s where arginine, cysteine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, leucine, and tyrosine come from that’s interesting.
They analysed the diets of 2,000 women and compared their diets to their current heart health.
They found those eating lots of plant-based protein like soy, beans, lentils and peas, had higher amounts of these amino acids and had lower blood pressure. And those eating animal-based protein like fish, meat, eggs, cheese and other dairy products delivering arginine, glutamic acids and tyrosine, had better artery health and were less susceptible to artery stiffness – a major contributor to heart disease.
What’s even more impressive is that the protective functions of these foods were just as effective as the effects changing your whole diet, getting active or quitting smoking were!
