If you're at risk of high blood pressure or heart disease or are just trying to improve your health, you'll know about how bad salt is for you!

You're making a conscious effort to lower how much salt you eat by leaving the salt shaker in the kitchen during dinner. But you might unconsciously eat foods that have more salt than you'd expect.

Discover an easy way to prevent heart disease by avoiding these four foods that contain more salt than you think!

---------------------------------------------------------------

The best way to prevent heart disease is to be aware of the salt content of your favourite foods

1.      Salad dressing: This one might shock you! Despite using such a little amount on your salad, you could end up ingesting 10% to 15% of your daily salt intake. Make your own salad dressings at home with a little balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and olive oil.

2.      Cottage cheese: It’s a healthier alternative to other types of cheese, but just one cup of cottage cheese might leave you with only half of your daily intake left for the day. Look for low salt options or mix it with Greek yoghurt to lower the amount of salt it contains in one serving.

3.      Cereal: Just a small bowl of cereal may give you 12% of your daily salt intake. Always look at the food label to assess how much salt it contains before you buy. Rather eat options with less than 150mg salt per serving.

4.      Low-sodium foods: Foxnews.com explains that “low-sodium” foods have 25% less salt than they originally have. This means they’re not necessarily low in salt, they just have less than they could have. Watch out for these foods and look at their nutritional labels before buying.

Always look at the nutritional labels of food to determine just how much salt it contains. It’s the best way to protect your health and prevent heart disease.
