Need to lower your cholesterol? Forget the low-fat advice and avoid these foods instead!

by , 20 May 2014

If your cholesterol levels are high, you've probably been told to lay off the fat. But your real enemy is actually carbs!

Introducing your real enemy for high cholesterol: Carbohydrates

As soon as you eat carbohydrates, your body converts it into sugar almost instantly. Then your liver converts the sugar into triglycerides and these get released back into your bloodstream as Very Low-Density Liproproteins (VLDP).

The VLDP molecules pass their triglycerides onto the Low Density Liproproteins (LDL) and High Density Liproproteins (HDL). And that’s where the trouble starts.

Here’s why this is bad news for you…

Why triglycerides are your nemesis for heart problems

When the LDL and HDL particles are loaded with extra triglycerides, they convert into small LDL and small HDL particles.
The small HDL particles (the good cholesterol) become weak and that means they can’t provide your body with effective protection against oxidation. Meanwhile,  the small LDL particles (the bad cholesterol) cause inflammation and oxidative stress in the body.
The result?

Chronic heart disease.

So, if you want to lower your cholesterol, the first step you should take is to eliminate refined carbohydrates and sugar from your diet.
This will reduce the amount of triglycerides your liver pumps back out into your blood. With less triglycerides in your bloodstream, your HDL cholesterol (remember, this is the good cholesterol) won’t be weak so it can protect your cells. And the LDL cholesterol won’t have so much muscle to cause havoc in your cells.

Eliminate refined carbohydrates from your diet to help prevent heart disease

Refined carbohydrates are any grains that have been stripped of the wholesomeness. These include breads, biscuits, cakes, white rice and sugar.

Once you’ve eliminated refined carbs, your triglyceride levels should improve and your cholesterol should normalise.
