In 2006, Tsuyoshi Watanabe of Hokkaido University in Japan conducted one of the first studies to prove this. Watanabe’s study examined the blood pressure-lowering effect and safety of CGA in 28 patients with mild hypertension through a randomised, placebo-controlled clinical trial.
All patients were randomised to receive treatment with 140 mg of CGA per day from green coffee extract or placebo. During the trial, Watanabe kept record of each patient’s blood pressure, pulse rate, body mass index, blood, hematochemistry, urinalysis and subjective symptoms. 
In the CGA group, but not the placebo group, blood pressure (both systolic and diastolic) decreased significantly during the ingestion period. There was no difference in body mass index and pulse rate between groups, nor were there any notable side effects.
From this study, Watanabe concluded that CGA from green coffee extract is in fact remarkably effective at decreasing blood pressure levels, and is completely safe for patients with hypertension.
