A recent study found that just 88ml of tomato sauce a day can help lower mildly elevated blood pressure.
In the study, 31 people with mild hypertension took a 250mg capsule of tomato extract every day for eight weeks. Each capsule had 15mg of lycopene — about the same amount found in 88ml of tomato sauce.
During the study, “both the upper and lower blood pressure readings of the participants decreased significantly, with the sharpest declines occurring during the final weeks of the study,” says Christine O’Brien of Nutrition & Healing
Remember, 88ml of tomato sauce is about a third of a cup. The good news is that this amount can be easily incorporated into a lot of different dishes like pasta.
