Heart problems? Northwestern University in Chicago believes whole-grains are the answer

by , 26 May 2014

Carbohydrates aren't always bad for your health! In fact, while a large majority of the carbs you eat have a potential to kill you, there are some types that are essential for you to eat. Not only do these good types of carbs help your gut stay health, they help you to ward off heart problems.

The Northwestern University did a study on adults who ate fibre-filled whole-grains regularly. Their heart problem risk was much lower than those who didn't!

So what makes a carb healthy or unhealthy?

Natural whole-grains contain the whole part of the natural grain, giving it a gritty texture because it contains fibre. But refined grains mean the good, nutritious parts of the grain goes into the trash and the smooth most inner part of the grain goes into your food. This endosperm is where the plant's energy comes from, and without the fibrous outside, these types of refined carbs make your energy levels shoot up.
