Help prevent chronic heart disease! Use these three steps to cut sugar from your diet

If you lower your sugar intake, you could lower your triglyceride levels, and in turn, lower your cholesterol levels. Here are the steps you can take to reducing the amount of sugar you take in:
  1. Going cold turkey is ideal but very difficult: If you eat a lot of sugar, it’ll be hard to cut it out of your diet all at once. Instead, make a conscious effort to gradually wean yourself off sugar. For example, if you normally have two fizzy drinks per day, limit yourself to just one. Then cut back completely after about a week. In the same breath, cut down on the number of sugars in your tea or coffee. And gradually cut back to zero.
  2. Look for sugar’s other names on labels: Sugar isn’t always listed as sugar on food labels. Look out for these variables and avoid them: corn syrup, hydrogenated starch, honey, glucose, dextrin, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, galactose, invert sugar maltose, lactose, mannitol, maple syrup, molasses, syrup, polyols, sorghum, sorbitol, sucrose, dextrose.
  3. Always check before you eat or drink: Some of the foods and drinks on your supermarket shelf are unsuspecting surrogates of sugar. For example, did you know energy drinks are loaded with sugar? So is lemonade and breakfast cereals.  Always check before you eat!
