Don't skip breakfast, it could kill you!

by , 25 July 2013

You might think skipping breakfast is no big deal, but new research says it could be a life or death decision! Studies have shown a huge link between skipping breakfast and the risk of heart attacks. Read on to find out if your bad habit of skipping breakfast could be leading you to an early grave!

USA Today reports new research linking breakfast skipping to a higher risk of heart attack.

Researchers followed over 20,000 men since 1997, and found those who skipped breakfast every morning were 27% more likely to have a heart attack.

Why breakfast lowers your heart attack risk

It may seem strange that one meal every day could drastically alter your life, but it’s true.

The scientists say that when you eat breakfast in the morning, you eat less throughout the day. If you skip breakfast, you’ll get so hungry you’ll eat bigger meals. If you eat a big meal, your blood sugar spikes up. That does a lot of damage to your arteries.

Over time, that sort of damage raises your risk of heart attack.

The researchers also found that people who eat breakfast naturally gravitate towards healthier foods throughout the day.

So the solution is simple: Don’t skip breakfast!

Easy, quick and healthy breakfasts that’ll lower your heart attack risk

If you skip breakfast because you don’t have time, try these quick, healthy breakfast ideas...
  1. Instant oats with fresh blueberries. Blueberries are high in antioxidants that help protect your heart too.
  2. Banana and strawberry smoothie. Prepare all ingredients the night before, so you can just toss them in the blender and whizz!
  3. Trail mix. If you prefer to munch on something substantial, make your own trail mix by combining raw almonds, cashews, raisins, dried cranberries and whatever else takes your fancy. Avoid dried fruit that’s candied or roasted nuts, as this lowers their nutritional value.
  4. Peanut butter on whole-grain toast. This is the perfect combination of protein and carbs to start your day.

Make breakfast a habit and you’ll have an overall healthier lifestyle. You may even live longer because of this one good habit, so try it!
