Drinking fruit juice increases your blood pressure, warn experts
One of the biggest problems when it comes to fruit juice is its high sugar content.
If you compare fruit juice to the whole fruit, all the fibre is missing so you’re getting no help to stabilise your
blood sugar. So your
blood sugar soars even though it’s natural and unrefined sugar.
The problem for your heart lies in the high influx of fructose – fruit sugar – and its effect on your
blood pressure.
And it’s not only the Australian study that found fruit juice is a problem for your heart health. Previous research confirms it too.
In 2010, Dr Richard Johnson of the
University of Colorado found that people who drank just 2.5 sugary drinks every day – including fruit juice – had an astonishing 77% increase in
high blood pressure risk.
And while experts don’t have a clear idea about how fructose increases blood pressure, Dr Diana Jalal, Dr Johnson’s colleague and co-author of the 2010 study, says she has a theory about why it’s so.
She explains that fructose lowers the levels of nitric oxide in your blood. This compound is essential for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels because it relaxes the muscles in your artery walls.
It’s the compound doctors give patients suffering a heart attack to lower their blood pressure and minimise the
stress on the heart.
But there’s another theory.
Fructose affects the amount of uric acid in the blood. This compound tells your kidneys to retain more salt and, as you know, water follows wherever salt goes. So the more salt your kidneys hold onto, the more salt and water there is in your blood, increasing the pressure within your blood vessels.
So it’s a good reason to stop drinking fruit juice… But it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a sweet refreshing beverage!
Here are four drinks to have instead …
