Actor Tim Curry, known for his Rocky Horror Picture Show performance as well as his role in the action comedy Charlie's Angels, was hospitalised last year after having a stroke. The 67 year old was at his home in LA when he suffered the stroke. Know the risk factors and be able to tell the warning signs before it's too late...
A blockage or a bleed in the brain will lead to a stroke. When a part of the brain can’t get oxygen because of the blockage, or there is an increase in pressure on one part from the bleed, things go haywire.
Your brain tissue is very sensitive. If the environment in the brain changes because of either factor above, you’ll see a physical change in the person.
How can you tell if someone is having a stroke?
Once you know if someone has had a stroke, you need to act F.A.S.T.
F- Check their face. Is there an obvious droop on one side. It will usually appear as if the one side of their face has slipped downward.
A – The arm check is next. Make the person stretch out both arms in front of them and close their eyes. If one arm drifts, this could be a sign that the person is having a stroke.
S – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. If they cannot say what you’ve said, or it is slurred, they may be suffering a stroke.
T – If a person shows any of these signs, the place they need to be is in the care of a doctor receiving emergency treatment.
A stroke is a scary thing to the patient and to anyone who sees it happening. Keep the person calm as they may not be able to express what it is that they’re feeling and this will be even scarier for them.
Know how to identify the signs of someone having a stroke, so that you can act F.A.S.T
and get them to hospital as quickly as possible for treatment.
