When veggies are bad for your health...
The average non-organic fruit contains more than 20 pesticides.

Think of that next time you pick up an apple.

In fact, clean food activists have identified the ‘dirty dozen' - 12 fruits and vegetables that are known to have the highest residues of chemicals when conventionally grown.

Meet the 'dirty dozen'
1. Apples
2. Cherries
3. Grapes
4. Nectarines
5. Peaches
6. Pears
7. Raspberries
8. Strawberries
9. Bell peppers
10. Celery
11. Potatoes
12. Spinach

Even washing and peeling many of these foods doesn’t rid them entirely of all lingering pesticide residue.

A vigorous washing or scrubbing is estimated to only remove a third to half of the lingering pesticide residue. And some foods, such as berries, can’t withstand rough handling, making it an even greater challenge to lose the residue.

Begin with the ‘clean 15’

You can begin by making small changes. If you don’t want to buy organic immediately or can’t always get organic produce, begin by substituting the ‘dirty dozen’ mentioned previously with the ‘clean 15’ as defined by the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

The EWG, a non-profit advocacy group, analysed the data from nearly 87,000 tests for pesticide residues conducted between 2000 and 2007 by the US Department of Agriculture and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

As a result, EWG came up with a list of 15 ‘clean’ fruits and vegetables that have the least amount of pesticides. The ‘clean 15’ fruits and vegetables are as follows:

1. Onion
2. Avocado
3. Sweet corn
4. Pineapple
5. Mango
6. Asparagus
7. Peas
8. Kiwi
9. Cabbage
10. Eggplant
11. Papaya
12. Watermelon
13. Broccoli
14. Tomato
15. Sweet Potato

If you want to take a giant leap toward lessening your body burden of pesticides, the quickest way is to go organic for all of your produce and meats.
