Tomatoes are also rich in folate which has also been shown to protect against fatty-liver damage. 

In another recent study, researchers in Israel studied the biopsies of a group of people with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). This is an advanced form of NAFLD.

The people with the highest blood levels of folate had the least damage to their livers.

How to get the most lycopene and folate from your food

Lycopene has to be activated in order for your body to absorb it. This requires it to be cooked with a healthy oil, like olive oil. So, any warm foods containing tomatoes, like soup, stews and curries are best.  

To increase your folate, add more dark leafy greens, like spinach, kale, broccoli, and asparagus, avocados, beans, and citrus fruits.

You can also take lycopene and folate as supplements to make sure you're getting enough of these protective nutrients.
