How to get your vitamin D intake without endangering your health
 
Optimise your vitamin D levels to reduce your risk of deadly internal cancers. Do this by
spending time in the sun often... But do this responsibly. Don't burn. Just 20 minutes mid-morning or mid-afternoon is ideal - without the sunscreen, otherwise the sun can't get to your skin.

You can also take a vitamin D3 supplement - about 1,000 to 2,000IU daily.

If you know you're going to spend a lot of time in the sun, like a sports day or a day at the beach, choose a chemical-free sunscreen - and use sensible clothing, an umbrella and hat.  

Vitamins that help protect against harmful UV rays...

Vitamin A helps make your skin feel soft, gives you a good colour, and can also protect against sunburn. It's only found in animal products like eggs, butter, cheese and tuna.

Colourful vegetables and fruits like carrots, spinach, apricots and broccoli contain carotene, which the body turns into vitamin A.

Both carotene and vitamin A are both fat soluble, so it's best to add some fat to help your body absorb these nutrients in the digestive tract. You could add some olive oil for instance.

Vitamin C supports the immune system and it is also boosts your skin’s own sun protection. It's found in oranges, lemons, grapefruit, strawberries, peppers, potatoes and fennel.

Vitamin E strengthens the immune system and acts as a shield against the free radicals that form in the skin from exposure to UV light. This is what makes you look older. It can also help fight the skin damage caused by frequent tanning.
