Setting yourself up to make healthy choices all day, every day isn't only about strict dietary limitations, staying unrealistically thin, overexerting yourself in the gym or depriving yourself of everything you love. Instead, it's about feeling fantastic, having boundless energy, improving your health and stabilising your mood!

If you're feeling overwhelmed by all the conflicting health advice out there, don't worry - you're not alone. It seems that for every health guru who tells you a certain healthy habit is good for you, you'll find another saying the exact opposite!

However, by following these six wellness tips, you can easily cut through the confusion and learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. These tips will also prove to you that wellness is accessible to everyone - regardless of location, budget or free time! Check them out.

Six tips to set yourself up for healthy choices every day

In the morning...
#1: Prepare a simple breakfast to kick-start your metabolism
In my opinion, the morning is the most important part of the day. Therefore skipping breakfast because you aren’t hungry or to avoid calories is a big no-no in my books! Breakfast is important because it kicks your metabolism into gear to help your body burn calories throughout the day. Some quick and easy breakfast favourites of mine include a three-egg omelette filled with vegetables, slices of fresh avocado on a slice of toasted rye bread and a green smoothie. On busy mornings when you don’t have time to prepare anything, a banana or trail mix of nuts will do!
#2: Hit the gym or practise yoga after breakfast
After finishing breakfast, I enjoy exercise as I feel it gives me the momentum to make healthy choices throughout the day helps me structure my day. It doesn’t matter how you work out – you can go for a walk outside, hit the gym for a serious workout or simply practise yoga at home. To prevent getting bored, mix up your exercise routine – for example, on Mondays and Wednesdays, go to the gym for a cardio and weight-lifting session, on Tuesdays and Thursdays go for a walk or jog around the block, and on Fridays practise meditation. Once you get into a routine, you’ll begin to enjoy exercising and the benefits that come with it!

In the afternoon...

Because the afternoon is the most difficult time of day to stay healthy – especially when boredom sets in – it’s important that you snack smart. I find that a green juice (homemade or store-bought – just make sure it’s low in sugar if you buy it in the supermarket) is the perfect healthy snack to boost my energy and keep me feeling full until I get home from work. Plus, green juice is a great way of getting your daily dose of fruit and veggies!
#4: Go for a walk in the late afternoon – even if your morning workout was a walk
Going for a stroll when you get home every afternoon will help you walk off the stresses of the day and clear your mind – not to mention get some more exercise in! If you live in Cape Town or Durban, you have no excuse not to go for a walk every evening – there are so many beautiful promenades and hiking trails to enjoy! If you live in Johannesburg – or the city of driving, as I call it – you should find a local park where you can go for walks. And while you’re enjoying your time out in nature, switch off your electronics and disconnect from social media – you can thank me later!

In the evening...
#5: Write down all of your thoughts and to-dos before bed
It’s crazy how quickly a day can fly by, isn’t it? I’m sure you can relate to the feeling that it sometimes feels like there aren’t enough hours in a single day! If, like me, you find yourself feeling anxious and your head spinning by the time you’ve climbed into bed, here’s a little trick to help – before you drift off to dreamland, write down all of the thoughts and to-dos that are clouding your mind. By doing this, you’ll prevent yourself waking up in a panic in the middle of the night. Plus, when you wake up in the morning, you won’t feel worried about forgetting something on your never-ending list of things to do because you’ll have your list right in front of you!
#6: Aim for eight to nine hours of uninterrupted, deep sleep
Sleep is such an important part of your wellness routine – it’s critical to both your mental and physical health! While most people aim to get between six and seven hours of sleep a night, I aim to get eight to nine. And if I’m waking up extra early the next morning, I make sure that I go to bed earlier so that I don’t have to play catch-up on sleep the following night. By getting enough uninterrupted, deep sleep every night, you’ll function well throughout the day and improve your overall health and vitality.
