In 2005, researchers at the National Institutes of Health tested the effects of high dose vitamin C on guinea pigs with noise-induced hearing loss.
They chose to run the experiment on guinea pigs specifically for one reason. Because, like humans, they don’t produce their own vitamin C. They rely on getting their requirements from food alone.
Researchers were interested in how vitamin C supplementation would affect inflammation and free radical damage in the ears.
Test results showed that supplementing with vitamin C reverses noise-induced hearing loss in guinea pigs.
And tests results in humans were similar. While researchers didn’t test patients who had noise-induced hearing loss, they discovered vitamin C plays a role in lowering hearing loss risk.

National Health Study includes vitamin C and its role in reducing hearing loss

The conclusion from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey published this year shows that vitamin C lowers your hearing loss risk, especially when it comes to noise-induced hearing loss.
Researchers checked 2,592 participants’ hearing individually – taking into account their ability to hear in association with their dietary intake of antioxidants which included vitamin C.
They found those with the highest vitamin C, magnesium and beta-carotene intake were least likely to suffer hearing damage at higher noise levels.
That means not only should you increase your daily intake of vitamin C, but along with telling your kids to “turn the music down”, they too should eat more vitamin C-rich foods.
