I wash my face with honey - here's why you should too!

by , 04 September 2015

For the past six months, I've been using honey on my skin in homemade face masks. My face has really loved it! The purpose of using honey in my skincare regime is to cleanse my face of impurities and make-up residue without stripping it of its natural oils. It works really well as a deep cleanser! Also, honey is super nourishing and offers lightening benefits.

For the past six months, I've been using honey to cleanse my skin (yup, that's right, I've tossed my face wash), and I think you should try it out, too. Here's why…

The benefits of using honey as a face wash

  • It has antibacterial properties, which can help clear up and prevent acne
  • It has healing properties, which helps treat redness or discolouration
  • It’s ultra-moisturising, and hydration is key for maintaining a youthful complexion
  • It’s packed with antioxidants, which can help ward off the first signs of ageing
  • It’s super-duper gentle, so works well on even the most delicate or sensitive skin

How to wash your face with honey

  1. Remove all your make-up using a make-up wipe, make-up remover or micellar water (I recommend using micellar water because it’s natural and very gentle on the skin).
  2. Apply a teaspoon of honey to your clean face and massage it in with your fingertips in light circular motions, concentrating on any problems areas.
  3. Let the honey sit on your face for as long as you like. I like leaving mine on for 5 to 8 minutes.
  4. Rinse the honey from your face using warm water (it rinses off really easily; warm water breaks up its stickiness).
  5. Follow with your favourite skincare products, such as a moisturiser (I like using a touch of coconut oil on my face after washing it with honey).

I recommend washing your face with honey in the morning and at night. Remember to always opt for organic raw honey, because pasteurised honey is heated and most of the beneficial properties are then lost in the process. Use the highest quality honey you can get your hands on – that’s the best option for your skin.

Some tips for washing your face with honey

  • If you have long hair, make sure to use a headband and tie it up in a ponytail.
  • Do it in front of a mirror to make sure you distribute the honey evenly.
  • Don’t apply more than a teaspoon of honey at a time or it’ll drip.
  • Busy morning? Lazy night? Let honey sit on your face while you brush your teeth!

What washing my face with honey has done for my skin

My skin is sensitive and tends to be a bit on the dry side. Before I started washing my face with honey, my skin was super dry and flaky, and pretty blemished, too. The skin on my chin and around my nose was especially dry.
After two months of using honey as a face wash, my skin had improved drastically. My complexion was noticeably smoother and more radiant. It was also incredibly well hydrated and the dryness has subsided.

Now, after six months, the improvement is amazing. I’m so impressed! My skin looks better than ever. Not only is it clear and glowy, my pores look more refined, too! I still break out in blemishes occasionally, but they now tend to be a lot smaller and heal up a lot faster. I’ll never switch back to a normal face wash.
I highly recommend you try this out. It’s done so much for my skin, and I want you to experience the phenomenal skin benefits of using raw honey as a face wash too! If you have a known bee, honey or pollen allergy, this isn’t for you, though. If you’re not sure, do a test patch on your wrist, leave it on for five minutes, rinse, and check if the area is sensitive or has a noticeable reaction.
