Gluten intolerance can result in depression, joint pain, gastrointestinal issues and more - make sure you know the six most common signs
Everyone's talking about going gluten-free right now and you're probably asking yourself if you should too.

The gluten-free way of eating isn't another fad diet. Some people are sensitive to the protein known as gluten, which is found in wheat, barley and rye, and experience extreme reactions after ingesting it. These kinds of people are better off without it.

So how do you tell if you're gluten intolerant? Read on for six of the most common signs of gluten intolerance. If you're experiencing a few or all of them, you shouldn't ignore the fact that you're probably intolerant to the protein. If you do, you'll be putting yourself at risk of depression, joint pain, gastrointestinal issues and more!

Six signs that you may be gluten intolerant

#1: You’ve picked up weight
People who are gluten intolerant usually experience unexplained weight gain for two reasons: They have systemic inflammation triggered by gluten, or due to malabsorption and gut permeability, which are two common side effects of gluten intolerance.

#2: You keep getting mouth ulcers
Gluten intolerance is associated with a condition known as “aphthous stomatitis”, in which a person constantly gets mouth ulcers and canker sores. They may also find it more difficult to keep their teeth healthy because of low calcium levels.

#3: You often get extreme migraines
Extreme migraines and headaches are common in people who suffer from gluten intolerance. These migraines can be very severe and leave a person feeling completely debilitated.

#4: Your immune system is unstable
An unstable or abnormal immune system is sometimes a sign of gluten intolerance. When one of the IgA antibodies – the ones that fight the common cold, the flu and other illnesses – in the immune system is sensitive or can’t tolerate gluten, the counteracting effect leads to irregular immune function.

#5: You regularly experience brain fog
While this is one of the more subtle symptoms, the scientific belief of brain fog as a sign of gluten intolerance is that the abnormal activity to gluten in the IgG is responsible for diminished brain function.

#6: You’re permanently exhausted
Always feeling exhausted or fatigued goes hand-in-hand with the side effects of brain fog. That said, most studies on this topic note that this is because people who are gluten intolerant have extremely low energy levels for their bodies to begin with.

As you can see, the signs of gluten intolerance go way beyond tummy trouble. If you think you may be gluten intolerant, you should consult your doctor.
