Four tips to be a probiotic pro and optimise your gut microbiota
These days, gut health and probiotics are both hot topics in the media - and for good reason. Your gut health is essential to just about every aspect of your health, and probiotics play a major role in your digestive health and keeping your gut microbiota balanced.

If you're currently taking a probiotic supplement to support or heal your gut, you're probably wondering if you're doing it right. Truth is - you're probably not...

This is because each time you pop a probiotic capsule, it enters a unique, personalised gut microbiota environment. Therefore, taking your probiotics isn't as simple as drinking it down with some water and restoring your gut!

So what can you do to make sure you're taking probiotics correctly to optimise your gut microbiota? Consider these four simple tips.

Four tips for taking a probiotic supplement

#1: Never take your probiotics on an empty stomach
In order to reduce the acidity of your stomach, you should always take your probiotics with food – for example, at breakfast first thing in the morning. This will also help the live microorganisms pass through your digestive tract unharmed.
#2: Nourish your probiotics with prebiotics
Taking a prebiotic supplement will nourish your probiotics and ensure optimal absorption. If you don’t want to take it in the form of a supplement, prebiotic fibre is also found in foods like fresh fruits and vegetables.

#3: Choose a probiotic brand with different types of species and genera
You should choose a probiotic supplement that contains Lactobacillus species and Bifidobacterium species as well as other genera such as Bacillus species, Streptococcus species, and Saccharomyces boulardii.
Taking a probiotic with different types of species and genera wil increase your chances of finding one that works well with your personal gut microbiota and help boost your gut health.
#4: Make sure your probiotics have a high CFU count
To make sure that your probiotics make their way to your gut and thrive when they gets there, you should make sure that they have a high CFU (or colony-forming units) count. What this essentially means is that they have a high bacteria count.
Here’s to a happy, healthy gut!
