Four natural ingredients that will quickly pacify inflamed, angry skin
I'll confess - I regularly struggle with blotchy, red, uneven skin. And it seems as though no matter how many high-end skincare products I try to calm my angry skin, most are largely ineffective! Yes, even the products that are marketed as the very best you can buy for inflamed skin...

What I've also found is that common treatments for inflamed skin, such as exfoliants and retinol, only worsen tetchy skin. So what can you do to treat skin redness if you suffer from the problem? Step one is to diagnose the cause of the inflammation. Is it sun damage, acne, or rosacea, for example?

Next, you should find a natural solution that works best on your skin. There are lots of natural remedies for treating inflamed skin that, in my opinion, work far better than any conventional cream or treatment I've ever tried! Here are four of my favourites...

Four natural ingredients that will soothe inflamed skin

#1: Colloidal oatmeal
Oatmeal is made of oat groats that have been rolled, steel-cut or ground. The kind of oatmeal that’s most commonly used in skincare products is known as colloidal oatmeal. This type of oatmeal is made of finely ground oats that you can easily mix with liquids such as gels to make beauty products like face scrubs and moisturisers.

The skin benefits of colloidal oatmeal are numerous – it’s fantastic for calming very red, inflamed skin and even provides mild exfoliation to slough off dead skin cells and refresh your complexion. What’s more, oatmeal is brimming with essential vitamins, minerals, lipids and avenathramides; all of which boast antioxidant as well as anti-inflammatory properties. One of my favourite ways to incorporate oatmeal into my skincare routine is by using it in DIY facemask recipes. I find that it works best with other natural ingredients such as plain yoghurt, honey and egg whites. Can you say flawless skin in a snap?

#2: Green tea
Green tea has long been touted as a natural skin-soothing remedy. It’s the antioxidant known as polyphenols contained in green tea leaves that make the tea an anti-inflammatory powerhouse and lend it its ability to fight sun damage, reduce bacterial growth in acne-prone skin as well as inhibit the enzymes that break down elastin and collagen.

Another major benefit of green tea as a skincare solution is that it’s gentle enough to use on any skin type – from dry to oily to sensitive. This makes it an excellent alternative to vitamin C, which can sometimes irritate very sensitive skin. While you can use green tea bags directly on your skin, it’s even more beneficial to use matcha green tea powder in DIY skincare recipes like facemasks. This form of green tea is loaded with vitamins and is highly concentrated compared to green tea bags.

#3: Quercetin
It may sound like a fancy term but, no, quercetin isn’t a chemical – it’s actually a bioflavonoid that naturally occurs in fruits and vegetables such as berries, kale and tomatoes. It’s also found in some leaves and grains. In the world of skincare, quercetin is renowned for its ability to reduce skin redness and soothe even the most sensitive skin.

A number of top skincare brands – even some natural, organic brands – use quercetin in their products as this ingredient helps stimulate repair. Plus, thanks to the high content of skin-loving antioxidants and flavonoids found in quercetin, it even helps combat the free radicals that can lead to skin ageing. Bonus!

#4: Nicotinic amide
Nicotinic amide, also known as niacinamide, is a water-soludble vitamin. The amide compound of vitamin B3, this naturally occurring vitamin is abundant in foods such as nuts, mushrooms and meats. So how do you apply it to your skin?

Nicotinic amide is actually a pretty popular topical skincare ingredient. It’s great for treating any inflammatory skin condition with minimal – if any – side effects. And thanks to its super inflammation-fighting properties, nicotinic acid is a very powerful solution for severe, difficult-to-treat skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, acne and sun damage.
