Eight reasons to choose almonds over peanuts

If you're anything like me, you'd choose almonds or almond butter over peanuts or peanut butter in a heartbeat. And, in that case, you'd be glad to know that that's in fact a very healthy choice!

Here are eight reasons to love almonds more than peanuts. Consider these handy pointers the next time you go shopping!

Eight reasons to eat almonds instead of peanuts

#1: Peanuts are acid-forming nuts
Almonds, on the other hand, aren't. So, if you suffer from acid reflux or other digestive issues, peanuts aren't the best choice for you. Why, you ask? Well, you see, peanuts are technically not really nuts, but actually legumes (you didn't know that, did you?). This makes digestion tougher.

#2: Almonds are far less toxic
Peanuts are more toxic and allergenic than almonds. This is because they grow in soil and their soft shell is practically a hotbed for herbicides and pesticides. Interestingly enough, some people that are allergic to peanuts may be able to tolerate almonds.

#3: Even organic peanuts are toxic
Well, most are, at least. Especially the ones grown down south. Yup, even organic peanuts are susceptible to mold contamination during travel.

#4: Almonds win in terms of protein
Though their (great) protein amounts are similar, nut for nut, almonds win every time. Just a handful - all you need a day - provides tons of magnesium, and more calcium than an equal amount of milk! They are filled with vitamin E, potassium, folic acid, some selenium (helps keep your cells healthy) and fibre.

#5: Almonds lower your risk of some diseases
Some studies have shown almonds may lower bad cholesterol, reduce your risk of heart disease, lessen post-meal blood sugar surges (important for diabetics), and protect against colon cancer.

#6: Peanut butter is highly processed
Most peanut butter, at least, is processed within an inch of its itty bitty life. Roasted (rather than raw) peanuts processed using high heat will be missing many nutrients.

#7: Almond butter contains less ingredients
Try and look for a nut butter brand where nuts are the only ingredient (no added sugar, salt, oils). Right now I have raw almond butter in my pantry, which contains far less additives than your standard jar of peanut butter.

#8: Almonds make for a great snack
Seriously, they're the perfect 3pm pick-me-up! Spread some almond butter on brown rice cakes or mix with a sliced banana and you have instant energy!
