While there's no scientific evidence that eating specific foods can help psoriasis, there is evidence that losing excess weight can reduce symptoms. Doctors and nutritionists both recommend eating a balanced diet to maintain a healthy body weight and control your psoriasis, as well as slash your risk of diabetes, stroke and heart disease, which are elevated in people with psoriasis.

According to Heather Mangieri, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and registered dietician based in Pittsburgh in the US, the following foods form part of the foundation of a healthy diet - make sure you add them to your diet right away!

Four foods that soothe psoriasis

Psoriasis solution #1: Inflammation-fighting vegetables

According to Mangieri, vegetables like spinach, kale, carrot, broccoli, squash and sweet potato have inflammation-fighting properties. “A diet that’s high in fruits and vegetables can have an anti-inflammatory effect,” she says. There’s no scientific evidence to back that eating these vegetables will help ease psoriasis. However, psoriasis is an inflammatory condition after all; so it makes sense that adding these vegetables to your diet will be beneficial to your skin health.

Psoriasis solution #2: High-fibre grains

Like specific fruits and vegetables, high-fibre grains also pack anti-inflammation antioxidants. Examples of these grains include whole-grain bread, brown rice, pasta, oatmeal and cereal. Studies have linked high fibre intake to lower inflammation levels and better regulation of blood sugar, so make sure you include these grains in your diet.

Psoriasis solution #4: Fish and seafood

You already know that foods like salmon, mackerel, albacore tuna and sardines, which are abundant in omega-3 fatty acids, are essential to any heart-healthy diet. Turns out that they’re also thought to reduce inflammation and assist the immune system, which is overactive in psoriasis sufferers. Plus, because people with psoriasis are at heightened risk of stroke and heart attack, it’s of course a good idea to eat fish and seafood at least twice a week!
