Why the “starvation hormone” in diet pills is putting you at risk?

In 1994, when scientists discovered that they could use the hormone leptin as a blockbuster weight loss treatment, they were super excieted. Even today, the Internet is loaded with sites that sell leptin supplements. They call it the “starvation hormone”!

Why?

Well, this hormone is the way your fat cells communicate with your brain. It tell you that you’ve eaten enough and makes your body burn the sugar that’s already stored in your muscles.

Essentially, leptin tells your body it’s full and to stop eating. And that’s why this weight loss supplement is so dangerous.

When you have too much leptin in your blood, your cells become resistant to its message

Dr Golding explains how when you take diet pills containing leptin, it causes a hormone imbalance and your body becomes resistant towards the leptin’s “stop eating” message. And when your brain can’t sense the leptin in your blood, your appetite increases.
Leptin resistance is linked to insulin resistance. Because of the increase of leptin in your blood, your pancreas keeps making excess insulin. This sets the stage for insulin resistance and ultimately type 2 diabetes.

So before diving into the newest diet trend think twice before you take just any pill. Read the labels on the pill bottles and understand the ingredients.
