Your fat cells are the reason your risk of type 2 diabetes is higher
Researchers from Melbourne’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute finally got their results of a study they were doing on type 2
diabetes earlier this week. And they are really promising.
They started out wanting to know what the link between
fat cells and diabetes was and they got more than they bargained for.
They found, that in a healthy, normal weight individual, their fat cells contain immune regulating cells called Treg cells. These Treg cells are responsible for ensuring cells remain sensitive to insulin.
But when they looked at why the Treg cells weren’t doing that for obese patients, they found their fat cells contained far fewer Treg cells. And that means far higher chance of insulin resistance in their cells.
They took their research one step further and made a compound that they exposed these obese fat cells to. It forced the
immune system to make more specialised Treg fat cells. And as soon as the levels of Treg rose in the obese tissue, so did insulin sensitivity.
It rose so far that researchers claimed it to have reversed the insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
Now, while it all sounds really promising, it’s not a trial that they’ve done in humans yet.
But there might just be a way for you to reap the benefits of Treg cells anyway. And that’s through your diet.

Some foods can increase your Treg cell production and likely reverse type 2 diabetes
Researchers have found some foods act as natural immune boosters. But it’s the foods that specifically increase your body’s ability to make Treg cells that you’re looking for.
Luckily, there are some.
Here are three foods to add to your diet to increase the number of Treg cells in your body to increase your insulin sensitivity.
#1: Red wine and grapes
The special compound you find in the skin of grapes and in lower quality red wine is a great immune booster.
Experts say resveratrol increases your body ability to keep your mitochondria working, which is an essential part of breaking down the molecules made during oxidative
stress. These molecules cause inflammation and destroy your
immune system. And this means less Treg cells to help combat diabetes.
So add red grapes to your diet, or speak to your doctor about a good quality resveratrol supplement to boost your immune system.
#2. Sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes are one of the healthiest foods that have a high vitamin A content. The vitamin A found in sweet potatoes (and carrots) is essential to boosting your immune system and creating a balance of Treg cells.
Eating sweet potatoes is a must in any diet for this very reason –besides, they’re great for your heart, eyes and bones too.

#3. Fatty fish
Not only do you need the omega 3s in fatty fish to boost your immune system, but it’s the vitamin D you need to increase your Treg cell production.
That’s right!
Fatty fish and fish oil contains a healthy dose of vitamin D, so make sure they’re a regular part of your diet.
The last two foods are especially important and vitamin A and D work in close conjunction with one another. You need sufficient levels of one to ensure the other works properly. And they’re both essential for your immune system and Treg cell production.
So, while you await further testing from researchers on how to directly target fat cells to get them to increase their Treg cell production, start adding these foods to your diet to heal yourself naturally from the inside out.
