What causes sugar diabetes during pregnancy?

Doctors refer to sugar diabetes that develops during pregnancy as gestational diabetes and because it usually starts or is first diagnosed during pregnancy.

But why does this happen?

Essentially, explains Mediline Plus, it’s because, in some women, pregnancy hormones block insulin from doing its job. When this happens, glucose levels may increase in your blood. And that’s where the problem starts.

But how do you know what your risk is?

Well, if you’re:

  • Older than 25 when you fall pregnant
  • Have a family history of sugar diabetes
  • Gave birth to a baby that weighed more than 4kg or had a birth defect
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have too much amniotic fluid
  • Have had an unexplained miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Were overweight before your pregnancy

…Then you could be at risk.

Luckily, there’s an easy thing you can do to lower that risk.

Do this! It’s the best way to prevent gestational diabetes

Since the most important factor behind sugar diabetes during pregnancy is your weight, keeping your BMI in the normal region is crucial.

And you can do this by losing weight through diet and exercise.

But don’t just follow any diet, it needs to be one high in fibre, says webMD. This because a study revealed that each 10g increase in fibre a day reduced women’s risk of gestational diabetes by 26%.

Don’t ignore this risk. Gestational diabetes is to blame for almost 5% of all pregnancy complications. Take control of your BMI by eating more fibre to ensure you don’t run the risk of sugar diabetes during your pregnancy.
