Dr Golding shines a spotlight on this power antioxidant

'Alpha-lipoic acid' (or ALA for short) has the potential to prevent and revere diabetes.

ALA is a sulphur-containing compound present in human cells, where it’s used for energy production within the mitochondria. In addition to its critical role in energy production, this antioxidant has anti-inflammatory properties which are useful in managing diabetes complications, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure and neurophathy.

Research on ALA includes several large clinical trials with Dr Dan Ziegler who supports its role in treating neuropathy, but his research has also found it will help improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar and cholesterol, improve blood vessel tone, and decrease inflammation and oxidative stress.

While most of the research on ALA in diabetes has focused on its effects on neuropathy, several of his clinical trials have now found ALA increases insulin sensitivity and helps reduce blood sugar and lipids, largely through improving measures of oxidative stress and inflammation.

Dr Golding our diabetes specialist recommends ALA to increase insulin sensitivity and improve blood sugar

Studies of ALA administered orally in a pill or capsule form have found similar beneficial results for hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar).

74 patients were divided into two groups (placebo, and 600mg ALA once daily) for a four-week trial to examine its effects on insulin sensitivity, using a measurement called the Metabolic Clearance of Glucose (MCR). ALA treatment led to significant improvement in MCR. And saw improvements in insulin resistance and fasting glucose after 600mg of oral ALA daily for the four weeks.

Adding Alpha Lipoic Acid to you daily routine is easier than you think…

Alpha Lipoic Acid is found in potatoes, spinach, broccoli and red meat… But to get the dose you need, you will have to eat 4kgs of spinach.

To make it easier, take it in a capsule form. Our Nature’s Secret to Healthy Ageing supplement contains 1,000mg a day.
