Having low blood sugar is one of the common causes of migraine headaches
Statistics show that 6% of men and as much as 18% of women in South Africa suffer from migraines.
One of the main reasons?
Low sugar levels (or hypoglycaemia).
But why does your blood sugar play havoc on your brain?
It’s simple really. It all comes down to the fact that “when you don’t eat regular meals, your blood sugar levels fall. If you then eat a sugary snack, blood sugar levels shoot up. These ‘peaks and troughs' could trigger migraine attacks,” explains the NHS.
The same is true when you’re dieting or if you make a habit of regularly skipping meals, adds migrainetrust.org. In fact, even delayed or irregular meals can make a difference. This is usually due to people’s blood-glucose levels falling too low.
But what can you do about this?
