by , 23 October 2014

If you're overweight and are at risk of diabetes, here's a solution!

All you have to do to slash your risk of type 2 diabetes and get rid of belly fat is use more extra virgin olive oil in your diet.

Spanish researchers posted their findings in the Canadian Medical Association Journal this month, explaining that people who follow a Mediterranean style diet - using more olive oil in all their meals - have a lower diabetes risk and better weight control - both of which lower your risk of heart disease and metabolic syndrome too.

But there's more too it than eating more roasted bell peppers and tomatoes like they do in the Mediterranean, it's about how much olive oil you eat.

Here's what the researchers had to say…

The more olive oil you eat, the lower your diabetes risk reveals study

Researchers assigned 5,801 participants one of three dietary interventions.

1.    A Mediterranean diet with extra virgin olive oil as the main ingredient;
2.    A Mediterranean diet with nuts as the main source of nutrients; or
3.    Dietary advice about how to follow a low-fat diet.

They found that both group one and two showed significant improvement in their weight and health without adding exercise or telling the participants their goal was to lose weight.

But what was really fascinating is that the group using more extra virgin olive oil not only lowered their risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome by a whopping 35%, researchers found they had markers to suggest following this diet could help reduce such conditions!

Luckily, adding more extra virgin olive oil to your diet is easy!

And MedicalDaily.com says you don’t even need to drown your foods in it. Just moderate amounts in your diet are beneficial enough.

Here are four tips on how to do just that…

Beat diabetes by using olive oil in these four ways

1.    Salad dressing: With its distinct flavour, it’s a great base for making salad dressing. Add a tiny pinch of salt, a squeeze of lemon juice and a dash of cream to make a deliciously healthy salad dressing.

2.    Vegetables: Because of its low heat resistance, olive oil isn’t great for cooking as it burns quickly, which isn’t good for you. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use it on hot foods. Instead of cooking with it, drizzle it on your vegetables after you cook them.

3.    Bread: While butter might not be as bad for you as previously thought, olive oil is still healthier. So, instead of spreading butter on your bread, dip it in olive oil as a tasty snack.

4.    Soup: Drizzle olive oil into your soup for added flavour and a healthy touch!

As you can see, using more olive oil in your everyday diet is easy. So be sure to increase your intake to improve your health and lower your risk of diabetes.
