Research at high altitude provides breakthrough data as to why people develop type II diabetes

Breakthrough research by the University of Southampton reveals a new development in why some people develop type II diabetes. And they discovered the key at the top of Mt. Everest. Discover how researchers hope to treat pre-diabetes in the future…

If you don’t get enough oxygen, you could develop type II diabetes

At the top of Mt. Everest, researchers looked into how oxygen and insulin affect one another. And their location was extremely important.

At the top of the mountain, there’s little oxygen, and if you don’t have supplemental oxygen you’ll develop hypoxia. When you don’t get the right amount of oxygen you need, your body goes through stress. And that’s what the results of the study confirmed.

Hypoxia is common in many chronic diseases like lung cancer, emphysaema, COPD and heart failure amongst others. It means your body doesn’t get the required amount of oxygen it needs.

So like at the top of Mt. Everest, it’s at this point that your body becomes sensitive to insulin hormone.

But that’s not all…

It’s the reason increased fatty tissue leads to type II diabetes

Lead author of the study, Prof Mike Grocott, said the results were of extreme importance. The more fat you hold on your body, the less oxygen gets to your cells. And this leaves you in a permanent hypoxic state.

Essentially, your fats starves you of oxygen, and this causes insulin resistance!

So while there’s hope for new way to treat patients heading for diabetes, you can do something on your own, right now: Focus on your diet and exercise routine to lose weight! It’s your best options to get rid of excess fat and stop it from starving your body of its health.
