Don’t eat this type of food while pregnant to help prevent insulin diabetes in your baby

You wouldn’t normally link insulin diabetes with diet, the way you do with type 2 diabetes. But it seems what mom eats while pregnant and breastfeeding is very important for preventing insulin diabetes according to a study in the journal Diabetes.

Researchers from Denmark fed 30 pregnant mice a gluten-free diet while they fed another 30 pregnant mice gluten in their diets. At the end of the study, the offspring of the mice whose mums ate a gluten-free diet didn’t develop insulin diabetes. This despite the fact that the mice pups ate gluten after they were born.

Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, barley and rye. The researchers believe by not eating gluten during pregnancy, moms can helps the babies develop a protective layer of bacteria in the intestines. This seems to be most effective when the foetuses are still developing and their digestive systems are fragile.

Plus, the study also showed the bacteria in the mothers’ intestines also improved. So, it’s a win-win situation for mother and child.
