After six months on a Mediterranean diet, the English research team found that the participants’ blood sugar had lowered, they lost weight, their good cholesterol lifted and their triglyceride levels dropped.
 
In another study conducted in Spain, people at risk for heart disease who followed a diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts and olive oil, were 30% less likely to develop diabetes over a four-year period than those who ate a low-fat diet.
 
The study even suggest, just adding olive oil to your meals can boost your health.  Participants who added fats from extra-virgin olive oil were 40% less likely to develop diabetes during the study compared with those on a low-fat diet.
