New large study finds that upping your intake of healthy fats can prevent type 2 diabetes

The study, co-led by Dr Dariush Mozaffarian, dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston in the US, analysed the results of 102 trials including 4,660 to evaluate how the different types of dietary fats and carbohydrates affected primary risk factors for type 2 diabetes.
 
For the study, the research team provided the subjects with meals with different amounts of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and saturated fats and carbohydrates. The team then evaluated how the dietary differences affected the measures of insulin and blood sugar levels as well as insulin production and sensitivity.

What the team found was that following a diet abundant in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats as opposed to meals high in saturated fat and carbohydrates helped improved blood sugar control.
 
Dr Mozaffarian reported in a university news release, “Our findings support preventing and treating these diseases by eating more fat-rich foods like walnuts, sunflower seeds, soybeans, flaxseed, fish and other vegetable oils and spreads, in place of refined grains, starches, sugars and animal fats.” He added, ““This is a positive message for the public. Don’t fear healthy fats!”
 
The team reported that their findings should inform doctors and patients around the world about the effects on diet and metabolic health and the risk for type 2 diabetes.
