Women have higher phthalate levels than men because of their love of cosmetics

 
A study posted by the journal Environmental Health Perspectives found that women with higher levels of phthalates in their system had twice the risk of developing type 2 diabetes than women with lower levels.
 
And while the study didn’t find a direct link between cosmetics and diabetes risk, phthalates are one of the areas women would most likely receive their highest exposure to the chemicals.
 
They’re in perfumes, lotions, nail polish and a variety of other items you’re likely to find in your make-up bag.
 
When researchers looked at the women in the study who had high levels of phthalates in their system, they concluded that 40 out of 1,000 women would develop type 2 diabetes because of it.
 
That means 4% of women who have high exposure to phthalates would get diabetes without any other risk factors being present.

Dr Tamarra James-Todd, an associate epidemiologist in Boston provides a possible explanation of how phthalates cause diabetes. She says: “Because they can bind to natural cell receptors, they could alter normal function.”
 
They mess with sugar metabolism in your blood and the way your body makes fat cells.
 
This means your body can’t use sugar as it should and you end up making more fat cells.
 
In another study, researchers took data from 2,350 women in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. They found the women who weren’t diabetic but had higher levels of phthalates in their system also had high resting blood sugar levels.
 
High blood sugar and increased abdominal fat – even if you can’t see it because it’s around your organs – are two of the most significant symptoms used to diagnose diabetes.
