A report released by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre has revealed that postmenopausal women who take a specific class of high blood pressure medicine may be at a greater risk for developing breast cancer.

The reason?

The calcium-channel blockers these drugs contain to treat high blood pressure, has a negative effect on your breast tissues. And this makes you 2.5 times more likely to get breast cancer if you’ve taken it for ten years or longer, explains Fox News.

While this only pertains to antihypertensives – a type of blood pressure medication that work by preventing calcium from entering cells of the heart and blood vessel walls, writes CBS News – is the risk really worth it?

Why risk breast cancer when there’s all-natural way to keep your blood pressure under control?

One of the most effective methods for controlling and reducing high blood pressure is vitamin D, says Nutrition & Healing’s Dr Jonathan Wright.

As we explain here, “without adequate supplies of vitamin D, one of your genes (a tiny part of your DNA) initiates the formation of excess quantities of a molecule called renin. Renin breaks down another molecule into angiotensin I. Angiotensin I is then converted into angiotensin II. And this is the ‘bad stuff’ that (in excess amounts) causes high blood pressure.”

So make sure you get at least 10,000 IU of vitamin D a day.

In addition eat more bananas, adds bottomlinepublications.com. They’re “among the best sources of potassium, a mineral that’s crucial for blood pressure control.”

Doing these two things can keep your blood pressure in check WITHOUT upping your breast cancer risk
