Everywhere you look, you’re being encouraged to ‘go green’.
You’ve been told to save water, install solar powered geysers to cut down your carbon footprint and even install energy savings light bulbs.
But new research into ‘going green’ shows that energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) commonly found in offices and homes could be damaging your skin, causing premature aging, impairing wound healing and even putting you at risk of skin cancer, reports Bottomline Secrets.
CFLs are leaking cancer-causing chemicals into your home…
The study, led by Miriam Rafailovich, looked at nine brands of CFLs of different wattages in New York. The reason: To measure the UV emissions from each bulb. The results: All of the bulbs tested emitted cancer-causing UV rays!
Why UV rays?
Well, “UV radiation is produced when an electrical current – turning on the light – passes through argon-and-mercury vapour inside the bulb,” explains Bottomline Secrets. That’s why the inside of CFLs is coated in phosphor to block the UV rays from escaping.
But as Rafailovich’s study revealed, this doesn’t always happen.
Why should you be worried? Because exposure to UV radiation is the leading cause of skin cancer.
Worried harmful UV rays could cause cancer? Take flaxseed
Flaxseed and flaxseed oil contains a group of chemicals called lignans, which to play a role in the prevention of cancer – including skin cancer, says Dr Allan Spreen in his book Tomorrow’s Cancer Cures TODAY.
In fact, adds Spreen, “researchers have found that a diet supplemented with flaxseed may reduce the formation, growth, or spread of prostate, breast, and skin cancers”.
How much flaxseed oil is enough to fight cancer?
To get the ultimate cancer protection from flaxseed oil, it’s recommended you take 6-8 tablespoons of oil a day.
But not all oils are the same. That’s why Spreen advises you head for the refrigerated section of your health shop first when buying flaxseed oil to avoid the high-lignan flaxseed oils. Not only do refrigerated versions taste better, but they fight cancer better too.
