According to the
Prostate Cancer Foundation, when
prostate cancer is caught in its earliest stages, initial therapy can lead to high chances for cure, with most men living
cancer-free for five years. But
prostate cancer can be slow to grow following initial therapy and it has been estimated that about 20 to 30% of men will relapse after the five-year mark and begin to show signs of disease recurrence.
But it’s not all doom a gloom.
Personal Liberty reports that U.S. researchers say men with
prostate cancer who ate a low-
fat diet and took fish body oil supplements may have lower risk of cancer recurrence.
The link between a low-fat diet, fish oil supplements and a reduced risk of prostate cancer recurrence explained
According to the
report, lead author William Aronson said, men with prostate cancer who ate a low-fat diet and took omega-3 supplements had lower levels of pro-inflammatory substances in their blood and a lower cell cycle progression score, a measure used to predict cancer recurrence, than men who ate a “higher fat Western diet.”
Researchers believe lowering the cell cycle progression (CCP) score might help prevent prostate cancers from becoming more aggressive.
They also found that men on the low-fat fish oil diet had reduced blood levels of pro-inflammatory substances that have been associated with cancer.
“Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce inflammation, and may be protective for other malignancies,” said Aronson.
For the purposes of the study, researchers measured levels of the pro-inflammatory substances in the blood and examined the prostate cancer tissue to determine the CCP score.
According to the report, Aronson said “this is of great interest, as the CCP score in prostate cancer is known to be associated with more aggressive disease and can help predict which patients will recur and potentially die from their cancer.”
If you want to opt for a low fat diet and fish oil supplements to lower prostate cancer recurrence, be sure to speak to your doctor first.
