Lycopene may ward off kidney cancer in older women

by , 29 April 2015

If you're 45 year or older or simply postmenopausal, this article is just for you!

Why?

Because you have the biggest risk of kidney cancer.

Thankfully, a new study led by Cathryn Bock of Wayne State University School of Medicine has found that lycopene-rich foods can prevent kidney cancer in older women.

Read on to find out how foods like tomatoes, watermelon and papaya can prevent your risk of getting one of the ten most common cancers!

Study proves that antioxidants found in lycopene-rich foods can fight off kidney cancer

The study involved 96,196 women where researchers wanted to analyse the risks for kidney cancer associated with lycopene intake

For five years, they followed the diets of these women closely to see what they ate and how it affected their kidney cancer risk.

At the end of the study, they concluded that women who consumed lycopene-rich foods daily had a 39% lower risk of getting kidney cancer.

And there’s a good reason for this…

How does lycopene aid with kidney cancer prevention?

While still in the early days of researching the cause for these remarkable results, researchers say they believe it has to do with the relationship between antioxidant nutrient intake and kidney cancer risk.

Since lycopene is a known – and powerful – antioxidant, this makes perfect sense.

So if you have a family history of kidney cancer – or have a high risk because you’re a smoker, are overweight or suffer from high blood pressure, consider adding more lycopene-rich foods to your diet.

These include tomatoes, tomato-based products, watermelon, pink grapefruit, guava and papaya.

In addition to added protection, you could also help your body prevent heart disease, osteoporosis, infertility and diabetes.
