One in eight: That’s how many women will get
breast cancer during her life.
But you don’t have to be part of this statistic.
And it starts, by knowing what foods to put on your dinner plate.
Breast cancer prevention on a plate: Four foods everyone should eat…
Whether you’re trying to prevent it completely or are looking for ways to keep
breast cancer from rearing its ugly head again, these foods could help:
#1: Sweet potatoes, spinach and squash
“Eating foods rich in carotenoids has been linked to a reduced risk of
breast cancer recurrence. Carotenoids are the natural pigments found in yellow and orange foods (such as carrots, sweet potatoes and squash) and dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and Swiss chard,” explains
CNN.
#2: Extra virgin olive oil
Not only is olive oil loaded with risk-reducing antioxidants and phytonutrients – which include
tumour growth inhibitor squalene – but it also has a higher monounsaturated
fat content than other oils. “Monounsaturated fats don’t oxidise in the body. Oxidation, a process that produces chemicals called free radicals, increases
cancer risk, writes
NBC News.
#3: Broccoli
Eating broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables could improve your odds for breast
cancer survival. “Of women in China diagnosed with breast cancer, those who consumed the most cruciferous vegetables were 62% less likely to die of breast cancer and 35% less likely to have a recurrence of the disease,” says
Reader’s Digest.
#4: Mushrooms
Mushrooms contain high concentrations of phytochemicals. These partly block oestrogen receptors in your breast, thus reducing your risk of developing the disease, adds the
Cape Gazette.
Breast cancer is common, but it doesn’t have to happen to you. Eat well and include these foods in your meals regularly and you’ll already be doing a lot to keep this disease at bay.
