Pomegranate juice: Your weapon in the fight against prostate cancer
Great news: Research suggests that drinking pomegranate juice may slow the progression of prostate cancer
This because, as one study of men with recurrent prostate cancer
showed, drinking pomegranate juice extract significantly slowed the rate at which prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels rise. This is significant because if PSA levels start rising, it’s a sign that cancer is present and progressing.
By measuring PSA doubling time, the study revealed that pomegranate juice lengthened PSA doubling time. The longer this time, the slower the cancer is progressing.
Another study backed this up.
It found that the length of time it took for PSA to double after surgery or radiation for prostate cancer was significantly longer in men who drank a glass of pomegranate juice daily.
And still further studies revealed the best news of all. They showed that certain compounds in pomegranate juice can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells completely, reveals an article posted on the Mayo Clinic’s website.
But what’s behind pomegranates’ prostate cancer power?
According to University of California’s Dr Allan Pantuck: “There are many substances in pomegranate juice that may be prompting this response. We don't know if it's one magic bullet or the combination of everything we know is in this juice. My guess is that it's probably a combination of elements, rather than a single component.”
That makes sense when you consider that pomegranate juice is revered for its anti-inflammatory effects and high levels of anti-oxidants. Both of which protect healthy cells from damage by destructive groups of atoms called free radicals. It also contains polyphenols and isoflavones which science has shown play a significant role in prompting cancer cell death.
And the great news is, getting these prostate cancer fighting benefits is as easy as swopping out your morning tea, coffee or OJ for a glass of tasty pomegranate juice.
