You follow a healthy eating plan, you work out four times a week, you don't smoke and overall you live what most would consider a very healthy lifestyle. So you've got nothing to worry about, right? Well, not necessarily…
The following five everyday habits either expose you to the same toxins found in cigarette smoke or cause cancer rates equivalent to those caused by smoking. Luckily, they're easy to fix with a few simple changes to your everyday routine.
Four unhealthy habits that are as bad as smoking
#1: You live a sedentary lifestyle
Believe it or not, but even if you exercise on the regular, sitting for prolonged periods of time can up your risk of various health conditions, according to Alberta Health Services-
Cancer Care in Canada. They found a strong correlation between being sedentary for most of the day to almost 160,000 cases of breast,
prostate, colon and lung
cancer every years. That’s about two-thirds as many
cancer cases are caused by smoking – how scary is that?
#2: You use vegetable oil
Cooking has polluting effects. And, even if you rely on an electric stove at home, you aren’t immune to them. Studies have found that high-heat cooking with shortening and soybean oil – sometimes simply referred to as “vegetable oil” – releases particulate matters, aldehydes, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. These are the very same compounds that are found in harmful cigarette smoke, and have been found to cause airway inflammation, causing numerous cancers such as throat and lung
cancer.

#3: You cook with gas
If your kitchen is equipped with a gas stove, I’ve got some bad news for you – you’re getting a daily dose of nitrogen dioxide, carbon monozide and formaldehyde. These three contaminants are also found in cancer-causing second-hand cigarette smoke. What’s more is that a 2013 study found that these three contaminants in homes with gas stoves regularly exceeded public health guidelines in the US.
#4: You eat loads of cheese and meat
Animal proteins contain IGF-1, a hormone that frighteningly promotes cancer cell growth. A University of Southern California study recently revealed that people who eat high-animal protein diets during middle age are a whopping four times more likely to die of cancer than people who eat low-protein diets. This mortality risk factor is comparible to that of smoking.
If you’re guilty of one or more of these everyday habits, be sure to modify your daily routine accordingly – it may just save you from getting cancer.
