Don't be so quick to turn to e-cigarettes if you're trying to quit smoking to protect yourself from cancer, warns the Cancer Institute

Many people have turned to smoking e-cigarettes for many reasons. Not only because you can smoke them in more places than you can normal cigarettes, they're also less intrusive to others and they're supposedly healthier for you. But many people use them as a gateway to stop smoking, thinking they're less harmful and less addictive.

And this is why, ever since e-cigarettes first hit the market, they've been all the rage. There was evidence that suggested that they don't have the cancer-causing properties like normal cigarettes do.

But more recent studies suggest otherwise.

Researchers at the Cancer Institute in Buffalo, New York, disagree with these initial reports. They're saying e-cigarettes are just as bad for you and maybe even more addictive than normal ones.

They're still cancer-causing because the particles in the e-liquid still irritate the lungs. It damages the tissue and causes inflammation.

They're more addictive because you view them as less harmful and less intrusive so you start smoking in places you'd normally never light up…

Use these four easy steps to quit smoking , for good


Step 1: Grab a buddy
 
Having someone to talk to, that’s going through the same thing as you, makes it a lot easier to cope with the withdrawals than it would be to do on your own.
 
Convince someone in your everyday environment that this is what you need to do together. For example, if you smoke most at the office, get a colleague to quit smoking with you. And the more “buddies” you have the easier it is for you to get through the bad days.
 
Step 2: Break the habit by sticking with the habit
 
Don’t all of a sudden chain yourself to your desk because you’re trying to quit smoking. But instead of lighting up when you go outside for a “smoke” simply have a five minute chat over a cup of coffee. Make sure that others who smoke aren’t in the area you are or it’ll make it hard for you to say no.
 
#3. Form new habits too
 
Smoking has a lot to do with habit and what you do with your hands. Some people find it easier to pop a piece of gum into their mouth to resist the urge to smoke, while others carry packets of sucking sweets with them to keep the cravings and urges at bay.
 
If you usually have a smoke at a certain time, make sure you’re doing something else at that time to keep you preoccupied.
 
#4. Give it time
 
A habit usually takes 21 days to break. So stick with it for three weeks and count down the days. The more you think about the 21 days and how your habit will be broken after then, the more you’ll convince yourself that it’s true.
 
Don’t resort to smoking e-cigarettes in an effort to quit smoking – you need to quit because it’s your only option for keeping yourself cancer-free.
