For the study, researchers followed nearly 1,400 subjects for 24 years. What they found is that subjects with significant dental plaque, and the bacteria that creates plaque, tended to die prematurely.
The researchers suggested that poor oral hygiene can up your risk of early death due to cancer by a frightening 80%. These findings suggest a compelling link between oral health issues like gum disease and cancer.

For example, researchers at the State University of New York reviewed the gum health of 266 patients with head and neck cancer. They looked at the bone loss in each tooth socket as evidence of serious gum disease.
Researchers said that for every millimetre of bone loss, the patient’s risk of bone cancer multiplied by four. They didn’t account for high-risk behaviours such as smoking and alcohol consumption.
