When bladder problems turn to cancer: What are your choices?

The treatment for cancer of the bladder depends on the stage the cancer is in. These are your treatment options for the different stages:
 
Stage 0 and I bladder cancer: 

• Surgery to remove the cancer in the bladder
• Chemotherapy directly into the bladder
• Immunotherapy (therapy that strengthens your immune system)

Stage II and III bladder cancer: 

• Surgery to remove part of or the whole bladder (cystectomy)
• Chemotherapy. Your doctor may recommend this before the surgery to shrink the tumours, or after the surgery to prevent the tumour from returning.
• Radiation

Stage IV bladder cancer:
 
In most cases, these patients will not benefit from surgery. Chemotherapy is the normal protocol for this stage.

What can you expect with your treatment for your bladder cancer?

These are the side-effects you could expect:
 
Chemotherapy: If you undergo chemotherapy directly into the bladder, it could irritate your bladder wall and cause pain when urinating. Other side-effects of chemotherapy include: pain, fatigue, sores in the mouth and throat, diarrhoea or constipation, nausea, loss of appetite, brain fog and hair loss.

Surgery: If your doctor removes your whole bladder, you may need surgery to reconstruct a bladder using a piece of your bowel.  
Immunotherapy: This treatment could bring on rashes, flu-like symptoms, diarrhoea, low blood pressure, headache, chills, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting.
