Broccoli sprout extract can prevent head and neck cancer, suggests a new study
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh
Cancer Institute (UPCI) set out to explore the
cancer-fighting compounds found in broccoli sprout extract.
The team, led by Dr Julie Bauman, first tested the effects of the extract on mice. They then concluded that broccoli sprout extract can protect mice against oral
cancer. This left the team curious to find out if it could do the same for humans…
So Dr Bauman and her colleagues then went on to test just that.
The team treated ten healthy volunteers with fruit juice mixed with sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extract. The volunteers had no ill-effects from the extract. In fact, researchers detected only positive outcomes.
They found protective changes in the lining on participants’ mouths, meaning that the extract was absorbed and directed to “at-risk” tissue.
As Dr Bauman comments explains, this suggests that broccoli sprout extract can prevent head and neck cancer by having a significant impact on your oral lining.
After all, head and neck cancer forms in your oral cavity, salivary glands, paranasal sinuses, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx and lymph nodes.
So when you take broccoli sprout extract, these orals parts of your head and neck is what it lines and ultimately protects from cancer.

Dr Bauman explains that head and neck cancer is common in developing countries. “Now that we’ve discovered that a simple plant extract can be used to prevent head and neck cancer, we hope these two cancers become less common. It’s far cheaper than medications and is extremely effective,” she says.
The team as whole explains: “People who are cured of head and neck cancer are still at high risk for a second cancer in their mouth or throat. And unfortunately, these second cancers are commonly fatal.”
They add that the use of this affordable plant oil can therefore also be very effective in helping ex-cancer patients prevent recurrence by protecting their oral lining.
