Nearly every man reaches a point where his testosterone no longer drives his sex life as well as he might like. There also come a time when his testosterone levels no longer supports a wide variety of related organs and tissues in an optimal way, says Dr Jonathan Wright of
Nutrition & Healing.
But it’s not only your
sexual health that sufferers when your testosterone levels decline.
Low testosterone levels increase your risk of
heart disease, muscle and bone weakness,
depression, high cholesterol, abdominal weight gain and even loss of mental acuity.
But you’ll be glad to know that these risks of these and many other symptoms of
ageing can be significantly reduced by appropriate replacement of testosterone.
And you can do this with stinging nettle.
Stinging nettle: An effective testosterone booster
According to Dr Wright, stinging nettle (also known as urticadioica) is generally regarded as a weed. It grows abundantly through the temperate regions of the world, particularly on nitrate-rich soil and in wastelands.
While most people know about it sting, which is caused by the stinging hairs, many people are surprised to learn that this humble weed has been the subject of intense scientific research.
According to Dr Wright, two different parts of this plant benefit major age related conditions.
“The nettle root is used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and the above-ground part (the leaf or herb) has recently shown unique value in the management of
arthritis, says Dr Wright.
When it comes to your testosterone levels, “stinging nettle root can help to naturally boost testosterone levels by keeping the testosterone molecule free from a carrier protein known as sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). While SHBG helps testosterone stay in your blood longer, it also prevents it from binding with its specific receptors in muscle cells,” says
MuscleandFitness.
According
MuscleandFitness, by freeing up testosterone from SHBG, you’ll experience higher levels of free testosterone in your body, which can induce muscle growth.
In terms of your
prostate, “this added free testosterone may help restore the normal testosterone ratio, thus removing an important stimulus to
prostate growth,” says Dr Wright.
