Save your breasts – get the right amount of sleep every night
Researchers from the
Case Western Reserve University analysed the records and questionnaires of 412 post-menopausal women during their study.
The women had all gone to the medical centre to receive
breast cancer screening after which they answered the pre-set questionnaire.
After sorting all the data, researchers found women who admitted to sleeping six hours or less every night in the last two years were more likely to have received a positive
breast cancer diagnosis. While women sleeping seven to nine hours every night had a lower breast
cancer risk.
The researches say it’s difficult to confirm the same risk for pre-menopausal women because of the difference in hormonal processes. But they say the likelihood is what you do before going through menopause has a great influence on what happens to your health once you go through “the change”.
That’s why, no matter your age, you need to make sure you get at least seven to nine hours of good quality
sleep every night.
And we must
stress that it’s the
sleep you get at night that’s most beneficial!
Working night shift increases your breast cancer risk, warns study
Having a nap during the day to “catch up” on
sleep you lost because of last night’s party or because you were on night shift isn’t enough to lower your breast cancer risk.
A study on nurses who frequently work night shift and sleep during the day shows their breast cancer risk is significantly higher than women who follow normal hours.
Time Magazine posted an article after the study’s release saying your breast cancer risk increases the more nights you work a week. For example, a woman working three or more nights a week for six years had
double the breast cancer risk of women working only one or two nights a week.
As you can see, sleep is important!
